Organic St John’s wort macerate, traditionally also known as red oil, is a plant-based macerate made from fresh St John’s wort flowers and organic olive oil. The product is typically light brown to reddish in colour with a characteristic spicy-sweet scent.
To produce it, freshly harvested St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is macerated in organic olive oil during the flowering period. Over the course of the maceration process, which lasts several weeks, the oil-soluble plant constituents pass into the carrier oil. Fresh maceration differs from processes based on dried plant material. The macerate is then filtered and stabilised.
The organic olive oil base gives the macerate a high proportion of oleic acid and makes it a versatile formulation component for cosmetic applications. The characteristic natural colour and scent of the macerate should be taken into account during product development.
The product is suitable for massage oils, skincare oils, balms, emulsions and other oil-based cosmetic formulations. Due to the natural constituents of St John’s wort, suitability for the respective application should be assessed as part of product development.
